The world seems to have been hit by the perfect storm, with news of natural disasters, political unrest, financial crisis, and heinous crime bombarding us daily. It can be overwhelming to keep up with everything happening, and it’s no wonder many people feel anxious and stressed out.
We’re feeling overwhelmed by the state of the world. But let us keep calm and maintain our mental and emotional well-being. Here are some ideas I have been doing to keep a level head in tumultuous times:
- Limit the exposure to news and social media.
While staying informed about what’s happening worldwide is essential, constantly refreshing your news feed or watching endless news coverage can be exhausting and overwhelming. Try to limit the exposure to news and social media to specific times (my case, 30 minutes) of the day and focus on getting your information from reliable sources. - Practice mindfulness and meditation.
Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools for reducing stress and anxiety. For example, taking just a few minutes daily to focus on your breath or engage in a guided meditation can help you feel more calm and centered. - Connect with others.
In times of crisis, connecting with others and finding a sense of community is important. Reach out to friends and family, join a support group or volunteer for a cause you believe in. Helping others can be a great way to feel more grounded and connected. - Take care of your physical health.
Physical and mental health are closely linked, so taking care of your body can help you feel more resilient in the face of stress and uncertainty. Ensure you sleep well, eat a healthy diet, and exercise regularly.
In my case, light exercise and hearty food always lift me when I’m feeling down. - Seek professional help if needed.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling to cope, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Instead, a therapist or counselor can help you develop coping strategies and support you as you navigate difficult times.
We should recognize that the world can be scary and uncertain, but you can take steps to maintain your mental and emotional well-being. Limiting your exposure to news and social media, practicing mindfulness and meditation, connecting with others, taking care of your physical health, seeking professional help, and don’t forget to have a sense of humor, so you can stay calm and centered even amid chaos.
